The company name was "Iwase Shuzo" when it was founded, but in the Showa period (1926-1989), the name was changed to "Mikuni Hare Shuzo" (meaning "the country of Japan is sunny") in honor of the momentum of the small nation of Japan during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. The brewery uses two types of water, hard and soft, from the Iwase family's "Shozu" spring water in the Kurobe River spring group, not only for brewing, but also in all processes.
