More than 180 years have passed since the Hatakeyama Sake Brewery was founded. Imajo-juku, where the brewery stands, has a history of prosperity as a key point on the Hokkoku Kaido highway that played an important role in the exchange of culture, people, and goods, and the atmosphere of those days still remains strongly in the old streets. It is said that historical figures such as Matsuo Basho, Kikanushi, Oda Nobunaga, Shibata Katsuie, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi passed through the road and took a rest at Imajo-juku. It is said that Zenji Dogen, the founder of Eiheiji Temple, also used the water of wisdom that gushed out in the valley to heal his weary body after crossing the mountain pass. The "healing water" that gushes out in the inn town is the origin of the name "water of wisdom.
