During the Edo period, the area around Niigata City was plagued by numerous floods and droughts. Ganjin were people who overcame numerous hardships and contributed to the development of the region, and made the dreams of the local residents come true by opening the Shinkawa River. In Uchino Town, they are also called "Ganjin (Gannin)-san," and a monument in their honor still stands today.
