- In Minato-machi, Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, we brew "Mutsu Hassen" and "Mutsu Otokoyama." Our brewery was founded in 1740 (Genbun 5) when the first Komai Shōzaburō, driven by lofty aspirations, left Ōmi Province and embarked on the path of sake brewing in Mutsu. Since then, each successive generation of brewery owners has continued this tradition. Today, the eighth-generation Shōzaburō is dedicated to crafting safe and delicious sake that meets the demands of our time for environmental and health considerations. He uses locally grown rice and yeast from Aomori Prefecture, along with the renowned spring water from the Kanisawa district of Hachinohe for brewing. One of Hachinohe Shuzo's most distinctive features is its historic complex of buildings constructed during the Taisho era. Six structures are designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties: the Brick Warehouse, Earthen Storehouse, and wooden shop/main house. Brick Warehouse (Red Brick): Built in 1916, this imposing brick structure was once used as a brewing warehouse. Today, it serves as the "Brick Hall," hosting concerts, events, and exhibitions. Landscape: Located in Minatomachi near Hachinohe Port, the sight of its red brick and white plaster walls lining the area has become a symbolic landscape of the region.
