- This brewery brews the famous sake "Taiheizan", which is named after a famous local Akita mountain. The brewery is known as the originator of Akita-style sake brewing. Kodama Brewery Co., Ltd. was founded in 1879 (Meiji 12) when the founder, Kumeinosuke Kodama, started brewing soy sauce and miso. Later, in 1907, the business form was reorganized into a company structure. The following year, in 1941, the company established an Akita branch office, and grew to establish itself as a leading soy sauce and miso brewer in Akita. Meanwhile, in 1913, the company also began brewing sake. The company introduced the "Taiheizan" brand of sake, named after the famous mountain that is most familiar to the local community. Taheizan" was blessed with many fans, including celebrities from all walks of life, and in 1933, the company released the nation's first cold-brewed sake, "Reirou Taheizan. In 1934, "Taheizan" was introduced as the first cold-brewed sake in Japan, and in 1934, it won first place out of 5,169 entries in the National Sake Competition, and became known throughout Japan as one of Akita's best sake brands.
