Tochigi City, located in the northern part of the Kanto region, prospered as a commercial city during the Edo period (1603-1867), when it was connected to Edo (present-day Tokyo) by boat transportation, and laid the foundation for the present-day Tochigi City. Even today, the city still retains the atmosphere of "Little Edo," with its earthen storehouses along the river and storehouses lining the streets. Kitanoseki Brewery produces sake in Tochigi City, which has nurtured such history and culture.
