- Founded in 1883. In addition to "Seiryo," a brand with a 140-year history, "Machida Shuzo"—established by the fifth-generation owner—now ships its products nationwide and overseas. We brew our sake in Komagata-cho, located on the outskirts of Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture. Our motto is to produce fine, pure sake. We are a small-batch brewery that insists on handcrafted production, carefully brewing small quantities at a time. We use the "futakouji" method for nearly all of our koji production. For yeast, we blend two types centered around Gunma Prefecture yeast, bringing out the best qualities of both. The well on our premises draws underground water from the Tone River system. Our sake is characterized by the umami of the rice brewed with this soft water and its pure, clean flavor. Our founder named it “Seiryo” (meaning “pure and clear sake”), and since it is enjoyed by the mouth, the character “ryo” (嘹) was chosen with the “mouth” radical. We hope that those who drink our sake will experience a sense of healing and bliss.
