Kura was founded in 1878 and named after the Kirin Castle built in Tsugawa, Aga-machi, Higashikanbara-gun, Niigata Prefecture. The brewery's brewing techniques have been applied in every aspect of the sake brewing process by the late Chairman Heihachi Sato and the current president Shunichi Sato (Ph.D. in Agriculture), both of whom served as National Taxation Bureau Liquor Appraisers. Among the many breweries in Japan, there is no other brewery where two generations of a father and son have served as sake connoisseurs and have provided guidance in sake brewing, making it unique in its technical capabilities.
