Furukawa Town in Hida City, Gifu Prefecture—the northernmost part of the prefecture—is one of Japan's heaviest snowfall areas, with forests covering 93% of its total land area. Nestled within the rich natural surroundings of the Northern Alps and Hida Mountains, Watanabe Shuzoten boasts over 150 years of history. Within its white-walled earthen storehouse, designated a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property, they produce their long-beloved flagship brand "Hourai" and their secondary brand "W (Double U)". Using underground water from the Northern Alps for traditional brewing methods, while also incorporating cutting-edge technology and digitalization, we strive daily with the hope that more people worldwide will enjoy drinking sake more freely, overcoming the image of it being overly formal, while of course prioritizing its delicious taste. "W" stands for three meanings: Watanabe (Watanabe Sake Brewery), World, and Warai (laughter). Watanabe Sake Brewery stands out as a brewery with a bold and unconventional impact. Through unique global initiatives like "Comedy Power Fermentation"—playing Yoshimoto Shinkigeki comedy 24/7 to the moromi in our fermentation tanks—and "Thank You Power Tank Aging"—imbuing our sake with customers' "thank you" messages densely written on storage tanks—we brew sake with a warmer, more delicious flavor.
