Kizemon Yamamoto purchased the sake brewery "Sugaiya" in the 2nd year of Meiji (1869) and established the sake brewing business. The current president is the sixth generation. The sake brand name at the time of establishment was "Shiraga", followed by "Midoriyama", and then Kashiro Yamamoto II named it "Kimpo" and made it a registered trademark. The sake name "Kinpou" is derived from the "Houou," a bird that is said to have appeared in the world with a saint in ancient China. The male phoenix is called "Hou" and the female "Phoenix" and they are said to live together in the Odongiri trees. The name "Kinpoho" is derived from the Chinese character for "phoenix," "鳳" and "金.
