- The brewery was founded in 1820 in Yame City, located in the southern part of the Chikushi Plain, the largest granary in Kyushu, under the trade name "Kitaya. According to the family record, "Our founder, Saikichi, was the eldest son, but in the Bunsei era, he handed over the main family to his younger brother, Wasuke, and started the sake brewing business. The eldest son handed over the main family to his younger brother and started sake brewing with a single-minded determination. The family's trade name was "Yoneya" (rice dealer), which suggests that the company was a rice merchant before its founding. Since then, the company has been headed by Uzaburo II, Kashichi III, Saikichi IV, Kotaro V, and Shigeru VI, with Kotaro VII serving as president since 1999. The name "Kitaya" was given at the time of the company's founding to express the company's desire to "spread joy through sake," and has remained at the core of the company's corporate philosophy to this day. The founder, Saiyoshi, was so passionate about sake brewing that he entered the brewery and served as toji, or master brewer, of the brewery himself. Since then, "The master himself should make the sake" has become the family motto and has been followed to this day.
